School Visits
"You
presented your poems with such joy and shared your
writing process so clearly that the young writers in our school couldn't
get to their pencils and notebooks fast enough to write poetry
themselves!" Carolyn Lytle, Vestavia West,
Birmingham, AL

Sharing
my poetry with students and talking to young writers is a real
treat! Each year, I schedule several school visits around my
deadlines and current writing projects.
My school visit programs are tailored to the academic needs of each
school. A typical school visit usually includes two to three
large-group assemblies coupled with informal small-group "Meet the Author" sessions,
classroom chats,
and a book signing.
Assemblies include a lively digital slide presentation, s tudent participation,
and props. All of my presentations are designed to give students an
opportunity to experience a variety of poetic forms and give them a
candid look inside the creative writing process. (I even broach that
dreaded topic: revision.) And, yes, if I'm traveling by car, I
often bring my huge paper maché frog, Studebaker,
even if he does take up most of the backseat!
Once a school visit date has been agreed upon, I send a packet of
information which includes an organization checklist, display
materials, and reproducible handouts for teachers and parents. In
addition, there are teacher's guides and curriculum suggestions on
this site that educators use to prepare students for my visit.
My honorarium ranges from $600 for a half-day visits in my local
school districts (Conejo, Las Virgenes, and Oak Park only) to $2,100
per day for visits requiring an overnight stay. These rates are
exclusive of actual travel expenses and there is a two- to three-day
minimum for visits requiring overnight travel. Feel free check my
references and
contact my publisher or me to discuss a school visit.
