KidsRead 2007
features Old Elm Speaks: Tree Poems

Based on their successful CityReads program, San Ramon, CA Public Libraries launched their first ever KidsRead program in 2007. What an honor to have Old Elm Speaks: Tree Poems chosen as their first featured book. Thanks to a generous grant from Target, the library was able to give out 500 free copies of Old Elm Speaks!

Amy Mockoski, Youth Services Librarian, masterminded this month-long program. The San Ramon Library Foundation sponsored my talk at the library. Best of all, students were invited to write about "My Favorite Tree" and twenty "Challenge Readers" shared their work. What a great way to celebrate reading, National Poetry Month, and Earth Day!

Students: It's never too late to exercise your imagination and write about your favorite tree! Check out For Students for writing tips.

Teachers: Please see the Old Elm Speaks Teacher's Guide for ideas and writing exercises.
