Ideas! Kristine O'Connell George's
Tips for Young Poets

Here are two important things you can do to make your poem better:

Let's see what I've written.

1.  Read your poem over several times.

  • Are there words you can take out?

  • Can you think of more interesting words to use?

  • Does the poem say what you want to say?

Listen up! I'm reading my poem aloud!

2.  Read your poem out loud!

This is the most important thing you can do to make your poem better.

     Read it!    OUT LOUD!

Out loud?  Yes! You might feel silly at first, but do it!  (Find a safe, private place and read your poem out loud.)

We use different parts of our brain to write and to listen. When you use BOTH parts of your brain you can almost always make your poem much better!

Remember: Poetry is meant to be read aloud!  Treat your poem right - read it out loud!

Now, let's take one last look at these tips!
