through theirs. I'm printing your ideas for poetry in the
classroom, as I'm always needing more exercises for my

I am a special education teacher in a small rural school in
AL. There are 1000 students, K-12, and I have two language
arts classes in addition to the other classes I teach. The
language arts classes are elementary (5th and 6th graders) and
one high school (8th graders). I enjoy having a poetry unit
every year and we have just started this past week. The unit
will last 6 weeks and will incorporate library skills, poetry
forms, "getting acquainted with famous poets", illustrations,
guest speakers, and presenting their own original poems and/or
choral readings to parents, faculty, and administrators toward
the end of the six weeks. I am always for exciting new ideas

I am delighted to have found this site. I teach grade three

freedom to the children. Thank you for the wonderful ideas

Thanks for some good ideas. I am a fifth grade teacher and
doing a poetry unit. Some of your ideas can be adapted. We are
studying some of the poems of Emily Dickinson but we need some
lighter stuff. There is a poet from W. Va. who portrays Emily
to classes. She visited my class last year and had the
children in the palm of her hand even though the children are
very young for some of her poems. It was amazing what she did
and how much the children learned. We even had a gingerbread
party since gingerbread was Emily's favorite food. She will be
again visiting my class on Wed. I so enjoy this poetry unit.

Was recently introduced to your books and now am a BIG fan.
I totally agree that children shouldn't focus on rhyming, then
they are just looking for a word to fill a space, not
developing just the right feel for their poem. Your books will
probably be my first touchstone texts (still in university,
although presently doing some remediation work in the above
mentioned school). Thanks. Emily Jackson Cullowhee Valley
