Recipe for Dog Cookies

Birthday

Only someone
who loves Little Dog
very much
would bake
birthday cookies with

liver powder

After we read "Birthday" students often ask me:  Do you really bake birthday cookies with liver powder? Of course!  And did I mention that liver powder really stinks?

Here is the recipe, compliments of my friend and neighbor, Linda.

Happy Trails Dog Biscuits

1 1/2  cups all purpose flour
1 1/2  cups whole wheat flour
1 cup rye flour
1 cup old fashioned oats
1 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup liver powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 large egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 3/4 cups beef broth (approximate)

Heat oven to 300°.
Line cookie sheet with foil

In large bowl, mix 1st eight ingredients.  Add egg, oil and broth. Mix with spoon to form soft dough.  Dough should be soft but firm enough to roll out.  (Add flour or water as necessary.)

On floured surface, roll out dough to 1/2 inch thick.  Cut out bones using cutter or pattern.  Place 1 inch apart on cookie sheet.  Prick a line of dots down the center.

Bake 2 hours.  Turn off oven and let bones stand in oven overnight.

Invite the neighborhood dogs to a party!  Bone appetit!
