Sasha and Malia Obama got their puppy! "Bo" is six months old and will be the new
"First Dog" in the White
House.
Little Dog invites you to celebrate National Poetry Month
(which I think is every month!) and the new arrival in
the White House by reading poetry about our
favorite canine friends.
Click
on the covers to the left to read some of the poems
from my books. (The poems in these books don't rhyme
which might help you get started if you are worried about making
your poem rhyme.)
Read two
fun poems about a White House dog written by
Rebecca Kai Dotlich and J. Patrick Lewis. (Reading
their poems is what inspired me to write a poem about the new First
Dog. You might want to do this with one of your friends. Choose a
topic and share the poems each of you have written.)
"Bo" is a
Portuguese Water Dog. These dogs are also called "Porties"
or, simply, "PWDs." This is a very old breed with an
interesting history. Portuguese Water Dogs were bred in
Portugal to help fishermen pull up tangled nets and to swim
messages between fishing boats. (This we before cell
phones!) If you read about these dogs on the Internet, they
are often described as "notorious chewers." I don't know if
this is true for all PWDs, but the one I do know, chewed up a
lot of stuff as a puppy! Porties are smart, have lots of energy, and
love to play, swim, and dive.
Portuguese Water Dogs are amazing
divers. Do you think Bo will get to swim in the
White House pool?
